- Racing Information
- Racing collegiately is as serious or casual as you want to make it and there are all levels to compete in. This is why collegiate racing is a great way to get introduced to the sport. There are three categories for the men (A, B, and C) and two for the women (A and B). The B and C are the beginner and intermediate levels while the A category is for more experienced racers. Although the A's races are much more experienced this doesn't mean that you can't get your competitive kicks in the B and C categories. Also the B and C categories are considered very valuable to every team. It is the B and C categories that get a lot of the team points that contribute to winning the team conference championships! The more experienced UNR team members love to encourage and advise new riders, for them this is a lot of what being a team is all about. Please don't be intimidated by the more accomplished riders, they actually do remember what it was like to be in your shoes. Getting people as excited about cycling as we are is our goal! So please join us on a group ride or come meet the team at a meeting. What ever you do do not be intimidated by the racing concept!
- The UNR cycling team is part of the Western Collegiate cycling conference. We race against about 12 active California schools. You must be a current team member (pay team dues) and purchase a USCF license (you can do so online at http://www.usacycling.org/ go to rider resources then download forms to apply/renew a license. If you are planning on trying racing for one race only you can also buy a one day race license at the specific event.
- Team dues are $50/year and include deals on gear from our sponsors and team pay at races. This is a great deal being as a single event at a race is $15, this means if you go to one race and do three events your team dues have already paid off. We would love to offer you the opportunity to race for free just once to try it but NCCA requires you to be a team member to race. Please visit our jersey page to see the wonderful Hincapie jerseys we race in, you must have a jersey to race. However, lots of the members are willing to loan jerseys for you to try racing so don't think that you have to spend the money right away just for one race.
Road Racing Information- For road racing there are three main categories: road races, criteriums, and time trials. Other possible races include Circuit races and mass start Hill-climbs.
- Road races (RR) are the longest race, usually around 20+ miles for women's B's and men's C's twice that for the women's A's and men's B's and up to 60+ miles for the men's A's. These are long grueling races that require a lot of endurance and are the ultimate test for all riders as they include flat sections for the bigger power hounds as well as hill climbs for lighter riders. They can end in a mass sprint or one rider way ahead of everybody. Teamwork plays a very important in these races and can win races.
- Criteriums (CRIT) are shorter faster paced races on an ~1mi. loop for 20-30mi. After the leader has finished the 20-30mi the bell will ring and everybody has to do usually 2 more laps. As in RR's teamwork is key for these races and can be the difference between placing first and somewhere in the middle of the pack.
- Time trials (TT) are also a faster shorter race but come in three flavors: individual, team, and hill-climb. Time trials are usually under 20 mi. and are a race against the clock rather than other racers.
